Worcester matchman John Snape showed his liking for the Whitehall club pool at Cotheridge when he took first place in the final silver fish open of the spring series. Drawn on peg nine, Snape offered his maggot bait initially on the bottom to take a three pound bream before going shallow to consistently net small Roach and Rudd.

His efforts resulted in the St Johns angler taking the best catch of the winter when he presented 15lb 14oz to the scales. Runner up prize went to Severn Stoke angler Bill Hartland who also included a bream from peg 20 in an otherwise Roach and Rudd net of 12 pounds.

Third place went to Whitehall silver fish expert Anthony Staite with a maggot caught 11lb 5oz from peg 18 to beat consistent John Shelton’s 9lb 15oz.

MERRILL IN GREAT FORM

WORCESTER matchman Lennie Merrill continued his good run in Whitehall Angling Club-organized contests by winning the latest four-hour open held on the club pool, despite the difficult conditions.

Drawn on peg 12, Merrill took a brace of good carp along with a few silver fish by offering sweetcorn bait over pellet close in on his six-foot deep peg.

Second-placed Gareth Jones also included carp in his maggot-caught net of 13lbs 15ozs which came from permanent peg 20.

Ashley Jauncey took third prize from peg 17 with 10-8-0 of pellet fish to narrowly beat organizer  Matt Barnes who weighed in 10-2-0 from peg eight.

The pool will once again play host to a series of four-hour silver fish opens, starting on Sunday, February 5 and continuing on February 19, March 4, March 18 and finally on April 1.

Limited spaces are available and anglers interested in taking part should contact Dave Warren on 07880-558866.
